CPD for teachers

At the Cool Head Company we understand that teachers really value CPD. According to a survey carried out by NFER (National Foundation for Education Research) teachers want to continuously update and develop their skills and knowledge for their own benefit and that of their pupils. Scroll down for 8 more good reasons for CPD!

The Cool Head Company offers a range of exciting CPD courses for teachers either onsite as part of an inset day or offsite.

Our courses are all about making teachers more empowered in the areas of personal finance, business and enterprise - in their own lives and to better educate their pupils for life in the world of money and work. Economic wellbeing is a core element of Every Child Matters yet we understand that many teachers have never been trained in these important life skills.

The EPPI Review of the impact of sustained and continuing professional development showed that most effective CPD:

  • uses external expertise linked to school-based activity
  • involves observation and feedback - especially teachers observing and learning from each other
  • includes peer support and provides opportunities to work with other colleagues and share good practices
  • will have a direct relationship with what teachers are doing in their classrooms

The Cool Head Company can help you make CPD a vital and effective part of your education offering through teacher enthusiasm, loyalty and skills development. Contact us to discuss which of the topics below would be best suited to your school and whether onsite or offsite training might work best for you. All our trainers are experienced professionals from the world of finance and money.

Our two major areas of CPD are:

  1. CPD for Enterprise Education
Enterprise education supports the development of the knowledge and understanding, skills and attributes that young people require to thrive in their future working lives. The key learning outcomes are:
    Enterprise knowledge and understanding
    Enterprise skills
    Enterprise attributes

  2. CPD for Financial capability
Financial capability encompasses three interrelated themes which are:
    Financial knowledge and understanding
    Financial skills and competence
    Financial responsibility

Our sessions provide:

  • a toolkit for achieving these outcomes
  • an opportunity to share ideas
  • relevant, practical, fun and useful content that can be utilised in the classroom setting
  • tips to integrate these areas across the curriculum or to use as a self standing subject

Why CPD is important in your school:

Schools face enormous pressures of time, budgets, and priorities. It can sometimes seem difficult to justify the central role of CPD. However, there are many reasons why a strong and coherent CPD system is vital in schools.

  1. CPD is about school improvement, about raising standards of attainment and achievement through high quality teaching and learning. It is a vital element of school improvement and not an "extra".
  2. CPD is about improving pupils learning. This occurs when teachers are motivated, developed, updated and aware. Evidence suggests effective CPD raises confidence, self-esteem, motivation and participation.
  3. CPD is about improving the quality of teaching. It helps to make all staff versatile, reflective practitioners who are happy to engage in discourse about teaching and learning. It helps them adapt to ever-changing needs and circumstances.
  4. CPD is about creating vibrant and exciting learning communities, with staff and pupils learning together producing an ethos of creativity, reflection and instilling a passion for lifelong learning.
  5. CPD is about broadening staff and school horizons especially through learning together with the school, in the wider community and with the schools inter-agency partnerships.
  6. CPD is about recruiting and retaining good staff. It provides people with the skills and abilities to support them in the classroom: and if they wish, to prepare them for the next stage in their career. At present 40% of teachers leave within the first five years.
  7. CPD guards against the danger of continually recycling the same practices and methods leading to a downward spiral and being overtaken by more vibrant schools in terms of performance and reputation.
  8. CPD is about "Every Child Matters", and about "every member of the school community matters".
